Your gifts help patients on their road to recovery.
George is a grandfather who traveled from Minnesota to Bethesda in search of treatment for leukemia. In July 2025, he underwent a stem cell transplant that was successful, though not without complications.
To complete his treatment, George is required to remain in the Bethesda area for up to six months.
George’s wife of 45 years must also relocate to serve as his full-time caregiver—a requirement for participation in this research trial and a necessity given the intensity of the treatment, which leaves patients unable to care for themselves.
Friends is supporting George and his wife by covering the cost of medical equipment not provided by the NIH, as well as groceries—an expense that has become increasingly difficult to manage while both are unable to work.
Your gift helps Patients Make Ends Meet While They Are In Treatment at NIH
Paul is a 35-year-old from Michigan who lives with chronic and acute conditions, including hepatitis and colitis. His illnesses are unpredictable and often painful, making it difficult for him to maintain steady, full-time employment. Paul currently has no medical insurance.
At the NIH, Paul is participating in a research study at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) that offers the promise of relieving his symptoms and helping him return to a fuller, more stable life.
During his time at the NIH, Friends provided support by helping Paul cover the cost of groceries and everyday necessities.
Your gift helps a Patient with Chronic Pain Find Relief
Gloria is a lovely, vibrant school teacher from Rhode Island who came to the NIH for treatment for immune deficiency, a condition that has lead to debilitating back pain. Gloria has been unable to work or manage the responsibilities of her daily life as a result of her condition.
Gloria’s prognosis is promising, but she faces a long road ahead before she is able to return to her job as a teacher. To help Gloria maintain a stable home, Friends is helping cover the cost of her rent and utilities until she is able to return to work.
Patients Play a Crucial Role in Finding a Cure for Sickle Cell Disease
Mariam has lived her entire life with the debilitating effects of Sickle Cell Disease. Recent medical breakthroughs now offer patients not only effective treatments but the possibility of a cure. Mariam underwent a successful bone marrow transplant at the NIH Clinical Center; however, the procedure led to new gastrointestinal complications that now require ongoing treatment. When Mariam needed care at a medical facility outside of the NIH, Friends covered her insurance deductible, ensuring she could receive the care she needed.
