Friends of Patients at the NIH

(originally Friends of the Clinical Center) was established in 1984 by members of the NIH community who saw first-hand the financial and emotional challenges faced by patients and their families, and the risk to the research should such challenges interrupt someone’s ability to their complete treatment at NIH.

The National Institutes of Health marked the 70th anniversary of the NIH Clinical Center in 2023. Friends at NIH is honored to support NIH patients and groundbreaking research throughout the past 40 years!

We look forward to celebrating with you. Stay tuned to hear about upcoming events including a special “Friends Night Out” planned for October 24, 2024!

Look at what we have been up to during the past year:

  • Provided 1,729 night stays in our apartments
  • Expanded our local housing program to 5 apartments: We maintain 3 dedicated for NCI transplant patients and we enhanced our Sickle Cell Patient Program with a second dedicated apartment
  • Covered the cost of flights for 9 patients and their caregivers
  • Assisted 17 families with utility and other household bills
  • Gave out over $7,500 of gift cards for groceries and incidentals
  • Served 500+ ‘Sunday Night Suppers’ to patients and caregivers in partnership with the Edmond J. Safra Lodge and the Foundation for the NIH
  • Brought treats and smiles weekly to NCI inpatients through ‘Fridays with Ana and Friends’
  • Supported patients from 6 different NIH Institutes

To all who support Friends at NIH—Thank you!

You make it possible for Friends to provide direct assistance to NIH patients and their families, and you help NIH fulfill its mission of enhancing health, lengthening life, and reducing illness and disability. We look forward to continuing to grow and expand our patient services and programs.
